Leeds United outcast's unlikely praise for Massimo Cellino as he plots next loan move

Leeds United midfielder Eunan O'Kane has spoken about his time at Leeds United as he continues to recover from the gruesome broken leg he suffered last year.

The Republic of Ireland international had recently embarked on a loan spell with Luton Town when he suffered a fractured tibia and fibula in September 2018 and has not played since.

In an interview with Irish outlet Balls.ie, the 29-year-old has revealed that he had to go back under the knife three weeks ago.

"I still had a limp and it didn’t seem to be going away. We knew I wasn’t ready to go back and play so we went to see the surgeon. He could tell something was wrong," he said.

"I am fit. I have been on bikes and things like that. I haven’t been lying around which helps. The aim is to be back on the grass in the next two to three weeks," O'Kane continues, with the aim of making a full recovery by Christmas with a view to securing a fresh loan move in January.

His time on the sidelines has seen him able to reflect on his three-year stay at Elland Road, which is owing to injury and him not being part of Marcelo Bielsa's plans currently lies in limbo.

The Irishman arrived in 2016 with Massimo Cellino still running the club and O'Kane has nothing but praise for the controversial Italian that left the club the following summer.

"I think everyone was aware it was entertaining but in terms of Cellino himself, I can't say anything bad about him. Anything he said he would do for me, he did it. He was a character. There are some good stories out there but at face value, with me, he stuck by his word," he said.

"He was always honest with me. From a person to person level, I don’t think you can ask for more than that.

"That is the thing. From a player's perspective, it is the exact same as the situation with the manager now and not being part of his plans. Obviously it was not nice to hear but at least everyone knows where they stand.

"When you ask a club for something and they tell you they will do it but don’t, that is more frustrating. If you are told 'no', everyone is on the same page and you can move on."

O'Kane made 58 appearances in a Leeds United shirt over the two seasons following his 2016 arrival from Bournemouth.
