Leeds United morning headlines as Kalvin Phillips backs protests, Mbaye Diagne transfer latest

Here are the Leeds United morning headlines for Tuesday, June 9.

Phillips backs protests

Leeds midfielder Kalvin Phillips has spoken of his support for the Black Lives Matter movement - and stressed how crucial it is for high-profile people to use their status for good.

“As professional footballers, not just as black footballers but as any race or religion, I think it's massively important to try and get this across - for people not to treat us as though we're any different,” he told the Mirror.

“I've been using the phrase Black Lives Matter quite a lot. I'm not saying that all lives don't matter, I'm just saying that right now black people need support and they need help because of the racism going on all around the world.”

The 24-year-old spoke of his hope for justice for all - and revealed that his family and friends continue to suffer racist abuse.

Phillips said: “I've got friends and family that sometimes can't walk down the street without being given a dirty look or sit out in their front garden because neighbours will shout towards them, treating them with no respect whatsoever."

Diagne blow

Leeds’ hopes of landing Galatasaray striker Mbaye Diagne have reportedly taken a blow - with the 28-year-old now intending to stay in Turkey.

Diagne had spent the last season out on loan at Club Brugge in Belgium, and was assumed to be out of favour.

But Football League World now suggest that Galatasaray manager Fatih Terim will give him a second chance.

Squad confidence

Ian Poveda has backed Liam Cooper's claim that the Leeds squad believe they can win the Championship title.

United are top of the table and seven points clear of Fulham in third, with nine matches left in the calendar when the season resumes on June 20.

They are only one point ahead of second-placed West Bromwich Albion, however, meaning a close title run-in seems inevitable.

But Cooper says every Leeds player is confident they can lift the title.

“There’s not one lad that doesn't believe we can’t go and win the Championship," he said to the club's Twitter account.

And in response, Poveda tweeted : “100%...one hundred percent!!!”
