Leeds United loanee delivers 'disappointing' Oxford United verdict after Exeter City defeat

Leeds United loanee Lewis Bate was left disappointed by Oxford United's narrow defeat to Exeter City at the weekend. The Yellows had come out on top against the Grecians in their previous two meetings this season, winning 4-1 in the second round of the FA Cup and a 4-2 win in the reverse fixture earlier this season.

Despite being above Oxford in the table, Bate believes Exeter are the type of opponents the U's should be looking to take maximum points from, especially on home turf. Sam Nombe gave the visitors the lead in the 79th minutes with the hosts unable to find a response.

Bate played the full 90 minutes in the League One clash, taking his number of appearances up to 21 for the season in all competitions.

The 20-year-old midfielder told the Witney Gazette: “It hurts. We should be winning these games, we expect to win these games.

“To come away with nothing at home is very disappointing for us. We’ve got to start putting teams to bed, we felt we should’ve been ahead and in the second half, it just wasn’t to be.

“On the pitch, we need to start winning these games so it’s disappointing when we go back into the dressing room after the game and we’ve not got the three points, especially at home. We have enough quality in the squad to be where we want to be and to start winning these games.”
