Leeds United learn how much Ollie Watkins transfer would cost as buyout clause is activated

The line-up for the 2020/21 Premier League campaign was confirmed on Tuesday evening, with Fulham joining Leeds United and West Bromwich Albion in securing promotion back to the top-flight.

After both missing out on automatic promotion in the closing matches of the season, both Fulham and Brentford went toe-to-toe at an empty Wembley in the Championship Play-Off Final.

After a goalless 90 minutes, Fulham got the job done in extra time, scoring twice through an unlikely source - left-back Joe Bryan. Brentford did pull one back right at the death through Henrik Dalsgaard, but the damage had already been done, condemning Thomas Frank's side to another season of Championship football.

And that means that the Bees, who could have clinched automatic promotion had they won their remaining two games, face the prospect of losing some of their key stars this summer, including attacking duo Said Benrahma and Ollie Watkins.

Benrahma has been heavily linked with a move to the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea in recent weeks, as well as Leeds, whilst Watkins has also been linked with a switch to West Yorkshire.

Whilst Benrahma certainly wasn't afraid to shy away from goal during the 2019/20 campaign, he didn't quite manage to match Watkins' tally of 26 goals in all competitions this season.

Only Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic bettered Watkins' tally of 25 league goals, meaning the Brentford forward has become one of the hottest properties outside of the Premier League.

Having spearheaded the Bees' forward line so well this season, it is only natural to predict that Brentford will be bombarded with offers for the 24-year-old this summer.

However, clubs may not feel the need to enter a bidding war for the former Exeter City man, as it has been revealed by BBC Sport that following the Bees' failure to clinch promotion, a buyout clause within Watkins' contract has been triggered.

That means that Leeds would be able to land the striker this summer for £18million.

In this day and age, that could appear to be a reasonable price for a player who has just netted 25 goals, as well as, you could argue, still have the best of his career still to come.

Watkins almost left the West London club last summer to join Crystal Palace, with the buyout clause at that stage being just £10million.
