Leeds United headlines as Barnsley boss gives verdict on Whites defeat

Here are the latest Leeds United headlines for Thursday, August 25.

Barnsley boss reacts to Leeds defeat

Barnsley boss Michael Duff says his team were undone by moments of 'Premier League quality' in their 3-1 defeat at Leeds in the Carabao Cup second round.

The Whites saw off the League One outfit 3-1 at Elland Road, although the Tykes did put in a spirited performance in the Yorkshire derby.

"I am disappointed," Duff told the Yorkshire Evening Post. "You are never happy losing. We started the game really well and the response was excellent after going 2-0 down.

"Ultimately, we have been undone by a couple of bits of Premier League quality and a couple of referee decisions probably have not gone our way as well.

"Their first goal was brilliant - whipped into the top corner - and their third goal was an excellent finish as well."

Third round opponents revealed

Leeds United will make the trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the third round of the Carabao Cup. The match with Bruno Lage's side and the rest of the third-round ties are scheduled to be played on the week commencing 7 November in what is a repeat of the opening day and one of seven all Premier League ties.

Leeds secured their passage into the next round of the competition this evening thanks to a 3-1 win over Barnsley. Luis Sinisterra and Mateusz Klich (2) were both on the score sheet for the Whites, who were pegged back to 2-1 in the first half thanks to Mads Andersen’s goal.

Wolves, meanwhile, defeated Championship side Preston North End 2-1 on Tuesday night to progress to the third round. Raul Jimenez and Adama Traore were on the scoresheet at Molineux.

Ferdinand praises Marsch for Tuchel comments

Former Leeds United defender Rio Ferdinand has praised Jesse Marsch for 'lighting up' the game against Chelsea before it had even started with his pre-match comments.

In his pre-match press-conference, Marsch said he was 'disappointed' that Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel would be allowed on the Elland Road touchline for the game, despite being sent off in the Blues' match against Tottenham Hotspur the week before.

Tuchel was given a one-match ban for clashing with Spurs boss Antonio Conte, but the ban was suspended, and therefore Tuchel was in the dugout for the game, which Leeds won 3-0.
