Leeds reflects on lack of Mad Friday celebrations on last weekend before Christmas

It is the last Friday before Christmas, or more commonly known in Yorkshire as "Mad Friday".

Usually, it's a night where people usually head to the hustle and bustle of bars and clubs to celebrate the festivities.

Sadly this year the celebrations are brought to a halt, as the bars remain closed because the city is remaining in the toughest Tier 3 restrictions for Christmas.

Mad Friday or Black Eye Friday is famed for it's tradition of rowdy revellers descending on the city and taking things a step too far.

The "night before Christmas" was originally dubbed "Black Friday" by the Police and NHS to refer to the day when emergency services activate contingency plans to cope with the increase in workload due to many people going out drinking on the last Friday before Christmas.

In 2013 the media began using "Mad Friday" or "Black Eye Friday" to avoid confusion over the American shopping event that was becoming popular in the UK.
