Leeds police officer PC Daniel Hepworth facing misconduct charge after causing high-speed crash

A former West Yorkshire Police officer is due to attend a misconduct hearing after he was convicted of dangerous driving.

PC Daniel Hepworth had been responding to reports of a suicidal woman who had self-harmed in Leeds on September 30, 2020, before he decided to drive her to hospital himself, Sheffield Crown Court heard in August.

The court heard the officer was 'on the verge of a breakdown' when he faked an emergency and caused a crash after speeding.

PC Hepworth stayed with the woman at hospital and left at around 5pm when he decided he wanted to get back to his base as soon as possible.

In an attempt to get there sooner, he illuminated his flashing lights and reached speeds of 17mph above the limit in Harehills Lane and Roundhay Road, Leeds and cautiously ran a red light.

PC Hepworth admitted dangerous driving and was handed a six-month sentence, suspended for two years, and told to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work.

He is no longer a police constable, according to West Yorkshire Police, but is due before a police misconduct hearing on Monday, January 31.

West Yorkshire Police released details of the misconduct hearing, citing the September 30, 2020 incident, and subsequent conviction.

The Force said: "The matters are individually and collectively alleged to amount to gross misconduct, namely a breach of the Standards of Professional Behaviour that, if proved, is so serious that dismissal would be justified."
