Leeds children's nurse completes mammoth 200 mile walk for LGI heart unit

A nurse who treats children with serious heart conditions at Leeds General Infirmary has completed a famous walk to raise cash for a local charity.

Heart theatre nurse Filipa Ferreira works in the Leeds Children's Hospital's hybrid theatre and helps to save the lives of young patients with congenital heart disease every single day.

The state-of-the-art facilities are funded by Leeds Children's Heart Surgery Fund (CHSF), which relies heavily on donations and the generosity of supporters.

In a bid to raise money for the charity, Filipa took on the Santiago de Compostela - a gruelling 174 mile walk across northern Spain.

Never one to do things the easy way, Filipa made the task even more difficult for herself than it should have been.

"I was supposed to walk the official distance of 280km (174 miles), but in the end I finished walking 337km (209 miles)," said Filipa.

"It’s an incredible walk and I even had the opportunity to take CHSF’s mascot Katie Bear with me to keep me company."

Filipa raised almost £1,000 for CHSF and she is now encouraging people to take on challenges on their own to support the charity.

She said: "The best advice I can give is do challenges that are good for you - and at the same time fundraise money for this amazing charity!

"It’s a good way to say thank you for the hard work the charity do, and a good way to help others."

Leeds CHSF's official event for this year is the Big Swim - a challenge that involves swimming the length of the English Channel, but over multiple swims at a local pool.
