Leeds bar owner says Boris Johnson is 'playing roulette with people's lives' over lockdown

The uncertainty facing pubs, bars and restaurants over the coming months has led a bar owner to claim Boris Johnson is "playing roulette with peoples lives".

The Prime Minister is expected to make an announcement to the nation later today (Monday), when a new three-tiered Covid-19 lockdown approach will be rolled out.

Areas set to be placed in Tier Three - the strictest category - will see pubs, bars and restaurants completely closed to eat-in customers, with switching to a takeaway model their only option available.

Most regions in the UK - including Leeds - are still in the dark about which categories they will fall into and it has led a prominent bar chain from Leeds to once again criticise the government.

Arc Inspirations owner Martin Wolstencroft, who runs Manahatta, Banyan and BOX venues in Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle, York, Harrogate and Ilkley, tweeted to say: "@BorisJohnson give us a clue... We have 17 bars in the North, employing a great team of 800.

"They have bills, rent and mortgages to pay. Are we opening these next few weeks?

"You need to stop playing roulette with peoples lives. Stop your silly games and give clear direction."

Mr Wolstencroft also penned a joint-letter with other Leeds businesses last week, to tell health secretary Matt Hancock how the existing 10pm curfew is "wreaking a devastating and irrevocable toll on our city".

The message was backed by Leeds City Council leader, Cllr Judith Blake, as the city continues to struggle under what the local authority has branded as "impossible" laws passed down from Whitehall.

The Prime Minister is expected to give an update to Parliament at around 3.30pm today (Monday) on the government's fight against coronavirus.

The proposed three-tier local lockdown system will have two purposes - to replace the confusing mish-mash of local rules, and to slap harder rules on parts of England where the virus is running rampant.

This will see every area in England placed into one of three tiers depending on how bad the virus is.

The new system will reportedly be called Local Covid Alert Levels - and they're unlikely to resemble a traffic light.

Rather than having a green 'low-risk' option, the tiers are expected to be labelled 'medium', 'high', or 'very high'.

Boris Johnson is also expected to hand more control to councils over contact-tracing after the privatised NHS Test and Trace failed to tell thousands to isolate. Northern leaders want him to announce a new wage package too.
