Lee Johnson explains why Bristol City were not at their best against stubborn Wigan side

The Robins missed out on the chance to go second in the league, but they will get another chance when they head to Barnsley on Friday night.

Yet another late goal - the second in a week - for City ensured the unbeaten run at home continues to six games.

After the game, head coach Lee Johnson gave his reaction to the match and explained just why the Robins had struggled against a team who have not won on the road this season and had only one point from their travels before this match (and who had 19 shots to City's nine; seven on target to City's four).

Johnson explained that the only positive was City's relentless pursuit of a result and Pereira's first goal for the club.

"Yes, they [Bristol City] kept going and that was the most positive that we can be in terms of performance, I appreciate that," he said following the game.

"We weren’t at our best. I felt before the game, you make an honest assessment of your team and you make an honest assessment of the opposition and I knew that we had to play at our best today to win this game and it wasn’t because we haven’t got good players, it was because I felt in picking a team I was sort of lacking in attributes.

"If you look at the injury and suspension list today, we just couldn’t tick all of the Championship boxes of height, experience, speed, ability. It was nothing against the players on the pitch at all because they’re all very very good players but it’s just getting that blend. And that, not cohesion because they’ve got cohesion, but sometimes for example you need to leave it into a big striker, which they had and we didn’t have today, we didn’t have in our armoury a midfield dog to win tackles and set off moves, we didn’t have it.

"I knew we had to play the perfect game and I knew that they are a good side. I like them a lot and I think if you’re building a side in your head in terms of attributes, Wigan have got a lot of them.

"We just weren’t as good as them today so even more reason to be happy with a point.

"We did five or six decent moves in the first half where we cut them open, they’re extremely aggressive in their press and we didn’t get it out quick enough in terms of moving that ball quick enough to then break the line.

"We did four or five times and that’s when we looked very very dangerous and slick, but it was often on the counter rather than with them having 11 faces behind the ball so that bit I was disappointed about but then again, sometimes I look at it and think ‘hold on a minute’ this is madness, the boys have done unbelievably well to be in this position, I said, if you had told me that that team today was starting in this game in the summer, I’d of probably put you in a funny farm because we’ve got so many key players that would’ve been involved in that game," explained Johnson.

The head coach also added that Famara Diedhiou's aerial ability was badly missed in the match.

He also confirmed that Saikou Janneh is set to head out on loan to Torquay United in the next days to get some game time.

Bristol City remain sixth in the Championship and now head to Barnsley hoping to go into the top two.
