Lee Bullen keeps feet on the ground as Championship leaders Ayr United head to Morton

Lee Bullen insists his feet are firmly planted despite Ayr’s red-hot start to the season.

The Honest Men have shot to the top of the Championship after an unbeaten opening to the campaign.

But United's head coach has called for cool heads as excitement starts to build around the form of his young squad.

Speaking to the Ayrshire Post ahead of tomorrow's trip to Morton, he said: “Let’s be right about this – we’re five games into a very long season.

“I understand that supporters will be bouncing at the moment and that’s fantastic for the overall positivity of the club.

“But you won’t find anyone within our dressing room getting carried away. That’s when this league will come and give you a sore face.

“We delivered a big performance and result against the favourites for the league last Friday night. But that doesn’t give us a divine right to turn up at Morton on Saturday and take three points there.

“We know just how hard every game is going to be.”

A Dipo Akinyemi-inspired Ayr were ruthless as they swept past Dundee last week.

United have since bolstered their ranks with the midweek additions of Livingston winger Josh Mullin and Aston Villa striker Brad Young on loan.

And Bullen has paid tribute to the overall unity of his squad as the secret behind their early success.

He said: “Dipo’s taking a lot of the headlines and all credit to the big man for his form so far.

“But you could pinpoint so many of the lads for the part they’ve played in the results to this point. It’s the character and morale among the group that is standing out for me.

“The first player to jump on Jordan Houston’s back and celebrate at full time on Friday night was Nick McAllister.

“I think that sums up the togetherness of the squad and they are all pushing each other on, which is fantastic.”

Ayr will bid to extend their unbeaten streak on Saturday when they head to Cappielow, with ex-Ayr men Jack Baird and Robbie Crawford lying in wait.

Aidan McAdams (shoulder) and Fraser Bryden (knee) will miss out.
