LeBron James Has Perfect Message for Gregg Popovich After New Spurs Contract

Gregg Popovich appears invigorated to continue his Hall of Fame coaching career with the Spurs. Following the team’s announcement that Popovich had agreed to a five-year contract extension with the team, praise from fans and players came from many directions, including Lakers star LeBron James.

James, who has spent time with Popovich with USA Basketball, has offered plenty of praise for the longtime San Antonio coach, and he took to Twitter to show some love—and to let Pop know that dinner is on him.

Popovich has been with San Antonio for nearly his entire NBA career, outside of a two-year stretch from 1992 to ’94, when he was an assistant with the Warriors. He became the Spurs’ head coach in 1996-97 and has posted 64.2% regular-season win percentage with 1,366 career wins, along with a 170-114 record in the postseason.

The 74-year-old has led the Spurs to five NBA championships and won the NBA Coach of the Year award three times (2003, ’12 and ’14).
