Portsmouth are reportedly ready to write-off virtually the entire £200,000 they paid Sunderland for Denver Hume in a bid to offload him this summer. Defender Hume came through Sunderland's academy system and made his debut at the age of 21 on the final day of the 2017-18 season in the Championship, before going on to become a regular in League One under Phil Parkinson and his successor Lee Johnson.
But Hume stalled over a new contract in the summer of 2021 and, while he did eventually sign a new deal, he played only sporadically in the first half of that season before being sold to Portsmouth in January 2022. Hume has endured a miserable time at Pompey, playing just 20 League One games in his 18 months with the club, and he is not expected to be part of head coach John Mousinho's plans next season.
The 26-year-old is about to enter the final year of his contract and, while Pompey have an option to extend his deal, they have no intention of prolonging his stay. At the end of next season Hume would be able to leave for nothing, and in those circumstances Portsmouth are ready to cut their losses and move him on this summer - preferably on a permanent basis or, failing that, on a season-long loan.

A report in the Portsmouth News says the club is willing to let him go for a rock-bottom fee if they can find a taker. And they go on to say that, so far, the only interest has come from League Two clubs, who would not be able to match Hume's current salary meaning the player would also have to be prepared to take a pay cut - unless a League One club comes in to offer an alternative escape route.
