The Liberal Democratic Party adopted a campaign policy for 2021 at its yearly convention on Sunday, aiming for quick containment of the coronavirus and victory in the lower house election.
"There will be a general election by autumn at the latest, and I am determined to lead the way and triumph in the election," Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, the LDP president, said in his speech at a hotel in Tokyo.
Suga expressed enthusiasm for hosting the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics this year, saying, "We will deliver a message of courage and hope from Japan to the world by taking all possible measures to avoid infections."
Regarding his plan to travel to the United States in early April, the prime minister spoke of a strong desire to make the visit a success.
Suga stated that constitutional revision "is part of our party's platform," but stopped short of directly calling for a change, saying, "I would like to aim for the passage of a bill to amend the National Referendum Law" that stipulates the amendment procedure.
In addition, the top 10 Diet members who recruited the most new party members last year were also announced. Secretary General Toshihiro Nikai topped the list.
Last year's regular party convention was postponed due to the spread of the novel coronavirus.
