Latest Tottenham transfer rumours: Mateta links resurface, Everton winning Khedira race

Tottenham have made a thoroughly impressive start to their Premier League campaign.

Jose Mourinho 's side sit second in the table, a point behind league leaders Liverpool, but could leapfrog the Reds with victory against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Spurs were busy in the transfer market over the summer, adding a number of reinforcements including Gareth Bale, Sergio Reguilon, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Matt Doherty to their ranks.

It seems likely that they will also be active in January as they look to strengthen their Premier League title charge.

The north London outfit will already be weighing up their options with the new year creeping ever closer.

Here is Sunday's round-up of the latest Spurs-related transfer rumours and gossip.

Chelsea vs Spurs is special rivalry

Prolific Bundesliga striker linked

Spurs are reportedly keeping tabs on Mainz striker Jean-Philippe Mateta ahead of the mid-season transfer window, according to Calcio Mercato .

The 23-year-old has been in fine form so far this season with seven goals and an assist in just eight Bundesliga appearances.

He was previously tipped for a summer move to north London but Spurs instead opted to sign Carlos Vinicius on loan from Benfica.

The report also claims that Serie A heavyweights Napoli will be looking to battle Spurs for Mateta's signature in January.

Everton leading race for World Cup winner

Juventus midfielder Sami Khedira could be in line to join Spurs or Everton for free in January.

The former Real Madrid man has not featured for the Old Lady this season, finding himself behind Arthur and Weston McKennie in Andrea Pirlo's pecking order.

It has been reported by Football Italia that Khedira's contract could be cancelled in the new year.

However, Everton are considered to be more likely than Spurs to land his signature, with Carlo Ancelotti having managed the German to Champions League glory in 2014 at Real Madrid.

Promising winger tipped for loan move

Former Spurs midfielder Michael Brown has suggested that Jack Clarke may benefit from another loan switch away from the club.

Clarke joined from Leeds United in 2019 and returned to Elland Road on a temporary basis immediately afterwards, before another loan move to Queens Park Rangers during the second half of last season.

He has been in and around the first team for Spurs this season but Brown believes his development would be aided by regular game time.

"I think he will certainly be looked at, it’s only normal that if he can go and play a certain amount of games to the end of the season," he told Football Insider.

"The next loan, he’s got to play. Wherever it be, whether the ambition isn’t always as high, it’s not a rush, it’s no rush to play but I think if he’s going go somewhere, you almost need to be saying he plays so he can relax, he knows he’s playing but it’s hard to do that.”
