In preparation for next year's Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Metropolitan Police Department has installed 140 state-of-the-art security cameras on roads that link Olympic venues in Tokyo and nearby stations, as well as in other locations.
The video is instantly transmitted to the department's headquarters to prevent terrorism targeting Olympic venues.
Security cameras were installed in 15 areas, including around the Nippon Budokan in Chiyoda Ward, the Ariake Arena in Koto Ward and the Yoyogi National Gymnasium in Shibuya Ward.
A total of 140 dome-shaped cameras, capable of taking 360-degree pictures of their surroundings, were installed on utility poles along the route from the nearest station to the venue, and in other areas.
In addition to alerting police to suspicious-looking people and objects, the camera footage can indicate crowded areas where accidents are likely to happen.
If necessary, police officers and riot police will rush to the scene.
The police are also considering introducing a system that uses artificial intelligence technology to automatically detect terrorists in crowds.
The department will directly manage the cameras.
