Latest Leeds United transfer rumours: Whites told to ditch £18m move as defender lined up

Leeds United are keeping up their charge to promotion.

The Whites have been in good form since the Championship restart last month, although they need to keep an eye over their shoulder at Brentford, who keep on winning.

Their position in the table has led to Leeds being linked to multiple players in anticipation for their Premier League return.

Here are the latest Leeds United transfer rumours.

Leeds line up defender deal

Leeds United have been linked with a move for Benfica defender Branimi Kalacia.

Football Insider claim the Croatian has some onto the radar of the Whites, who will test Benfica's resolve to keep him with a firm bid.

The centre-back has impressed with different data metrics as the club look to land a defender who can fit into Marcelo Bielsa's style of play.

Celtic and Watford are also said to be interested in the 22-year-old.

Whites told to ditch Augustin for White

Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan has told the Whites to ditch plans to sign Jean-Kevin Augustin this summer.

Augustin's loan move to Elland Road has expired, but the Whites still have an obligation to sign him permanently should they win promotion.

Yet Whelan feels they should try and get out of the deal and instead put the money towards on-loan defender Ben White.

He told Football Insider : “It is not a great scenario.

“It looks like the worst signing in the world and it looks like we are signing a player who is hampered with injuries.

“Big question marks over whether he can play the Marcelo Bielsa way, so far, he cannot even get through training.

“I am not sure that we want to be dealing with players with that sort of temperament.

“£18million is a lot of money to buy a player who has a massive question mark over his head.

“It is a waste of money. A waste of £18million that could go towards buying Ben White.

“We cannot afford to waste money on players like that. We have seen 48 minutes and 48 minutes of not very good. This is a really sticky situation Leeds United are in.”

Defender a priority

Leeds Live's very own Beren Cross says centre-back should be the priority for the Whites this summer if they fail to land Ben White

Speaking to MOT Leeds United News, he said: "If White does not return, a stellar centre-back will be an absolute priority.

"They may cost a tidy sum in the new market."
