Late night mountain rescue operation launched as two walkers get lost in Northumberland

Two walkers were found in a late night mountain rescue after losing their way climbing down The Cheviots in Northumberland.

The women had become lost in bad visibility on Saturday and due to bad signal, they weren't able to be tracked down initially.

Teams from Northumberland National Park Mountain Rescue Team and North of Tyne Mountain Rescue Team were involved in the operation, six people were called to help with a further 10 on standby.

After a full day of training, the crews were called out by Northumbria Police to help with the search and the smartphone location tool PhoneFind eventually managed to place the walkers between Wooler Common and the College Valley, below Broadhope Hill and Preston Hill in Northumberland National Park.

The teams were alerted at around 8:15pm and reached the women at around 9:30pm.

A spokesperson for Northumberland National Park Mountain Rescue Team said: "With the very kind assistance of the head keeper from Lilburn Estates, we were able to access the relieved walkers’ location in an Argocat.

"After an initial medical assessment and the provision of some warm clothing, the walkers were evacuated back to our Toyota Hilux and then to their car in the Harthope Valley.

"The walkers were descending from The Cheviot in poor visibility when they took a wrong turn.

"On realising they had gone wrong and after attempting to relocate themselves, the walkers did exactly the right thing and dialled 999 asked for the police and requested mountain rescue. They then remained in the same location until we arrived.

"A swift and successful outcome for all concerned.

"The incident involved six team members for three hours 15 minutes. A further 12 members were on standby should further assistance been required."
