Las Vegas is heading into one of its hottest weeks of the year, with forecasters warning that temperatures could climb above 110°F (43°C) by midweek. After the remnants of Tropical Storm Douglas moved away, drier air has returned to southern Nevada, allowing a strong high-pressure system to push temperatures well above normal.
While no widespread school or office closures have been announced, residents are being urged to take precautions against the dangerous heat.
How hot will Las Vegas get this week?
The forecast for Monday, July 6, calls for a high of 106°F (41°C) and a low of 84°F (29°C). However, temperatures are expected to rise further over the next few days, with Wednesday and Thursday likely to be the hottest, bringing a significant chance of exceeding 110°F (43°C).
Forecasters say a strengthening high-pressure system over the south-western United States will keep daytime temperatures 5 to 10 degrees above average throughout the week.
Heat risk expected to increase
Weather officials have warned that the heat will become increasingly dangerous as the week progresses.
A moderate HeatRisk is expected during the middle of the week, while Thursday and Friday are forecast to reach major HeatRisk levels. People are advised to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day and check on vulnerable family members and neighbours.
Monsoon moisture could return by the weekend
Although dry conditions will dominate for most of the week, longer-range forecasts suggest monsoon moisture could move back into the region by next weekend.
If that happens, Las Vegas may see scattered showers and thunderstorms. However, forecasters say storm development will depend on the strength and position of the high-pressure ridge over the Four Corners region.
Lake Mead visitors urged to take extra care
Those planning to visit Lake Mead should prepare for intense sunshine and hot conditions.
The forecast predicts sunny weather with temperatures reaching 110°F, while wind gusts of around 23 mph could produce waves between 1 and 1.5 feet.
The UV Index is expected to reach 12, which falls into the extreme category. People spending time outdoors are advised to wear sunscreen, protective clothing and drink plenty of water.
Rainfall remains well below last year's levels
Las Vegas has received just 0.52 inches of rainfall so far this year, significantly lower than the 2.05 inches recorded by the same time last year. The expected return of monsoon moisture could provide some much-needed rainfall, although any showers are likely to be isolated.
