Larne drop points in title race as Newry City secure deserved draw

Newry City put a dent in Larne's title hopes as they produced a resolute performance to secure a point in a goalless draw at The Showgrounds.

Tiernan Lynch's side created numerous chances throughout but they could not find that all important breakthrough.

New signing Andrew Ryan was handed a Larne debut and right from the off he showed some nice touches, linking up with Michael Glynn early on with the wingback firing over from outside the box.

Joe Thomson, who netted in the visitors' 2-0 win over Portadown in midweek, was denied a spectacular second as Steven Maguire tipped over the midfielder's pile driver on 22 minutes.

The Newry stopper did well to claw away Glynn's resulting corner as the visitors continued to press.

Maguire had to push away a Ryan effort on 32 minutes, Lee Bonis tried to latch on to the loose ball but was penalised for a foul on the keeper.

The visitors continued to ask the questions after the break with Glynn, Ryan and Thomson all going close before the hour mark.

Larne spurned a big opportunity to take the lead on 63 minutes as Glynn played in Bonis, but the striker dragged his shot wide of the near post.

Ryan McGivern then put his body on the line diving in to block a Glynn effort in front of goal as we moved into the last 20 minutes.

Maguire was called into action again first to push away Aaron Donnelly's curling free kick and to deal with a Paul O'Neill header after the ball was recycled.

At the other end Daniel Hughes was causing problems for the Invermen on the break.

Right at the death Leroy Millar found space in the Newry bos, but shot straight at Maguire much to the relief of the home fans.
