Large crowds at funeral of 'Billy Braces' to be reviewed by police

Large crowds who turned up at the funeral of "Billy Braces" will be 'reviewed' by police.

Officers watched on as grieving family, friends and loves ones walked through Runcorn Old Town on Friday afternoon.

The coffin was carried along the streets and into Runcorn cemetery shortly after midday as police travelled with the procession.

A large trailer carrying flowers, photographs, balloons and a Welsh flag was also driven through the area.

The nickname "Billy Braces" was also printed onto a banner and the side of the lorry in tribute to the popular man.

After the funeral had finished, Cheshire Police confirmed that people who had travelled to the funeral were spoken to and dispersed.

Officers say the lockdown regulations were explained to the groups and also said they will carry out a review.

This will determine whether any further action is needed.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the force said: "On Friday, February 12 a funeral procession and ceremony took place in Runcorn Old Town.

"A significant number of mourners had travelled to pay their respects and Cheshire police officers attended in a bid to ensure that current Covid-19 regulations in relation to gatherings and funerals were complied with.

"Officers engaged and explained the lockdown regulations to those present, and encouraged them to stick to the rules.

"As a result, a number of people were dispersed and a review will take place to assess if any follow up action is necessary.

"We recognise the impact of the national restrictions, particularly at times when families are grieving such a tragic loss, but it is in all our interest to continue to comply with the regulations to help protect the NHS and save lives."

"Keep his family in prayers for the coming days ahead."
