Large bonfire extinguished and removed in Crumlin

Dublin Fire Brigade and gardai last night extinguished and removed a large bonfire they considered a danger to members of the public in Crumlin.

The service later tweeted: "While we wanted everyone to enjoy their Halloween celebrations, if a fire was dangerous we would intervene to extinguish it."

In various parts of Ireland, bonfire nights are held on June 23, April 30 and October 31.

In the city of Cork, and many rural parts of the Republic of Ireland, Bonfire Night is June 23, Saint John's Eve night. It has its origins in a religious celebration and originally featured prayers for bountiful crops. The night is linked to the summer solstice or Midsummer's Eve.

In the city of Limerick, Bonfire Night is held on May Eve, April 30, on the eve of the Celtic festival of Bealtaine.
