Lansing chemical tank cleaning company faces $79,464 OSHA fine

Jan. 06--A Lansing-based chemical tank cleaning company has been cited for exposing workers to dangerous conditions, the U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Administration said Tuesday.

Dedicated TCS faces a fine of up to $79,464 after inspectors found gas meters in July that were not working at a company facility in southwest suburban Channahon. The facility lacked rescue and retrieval devices and appropriate lighting for the confined spaces workers cleaned. It also failed to train workers to use protective equipment.

OSHA called two of the company's 10 violations "serious" for the use of damaged extension cords and for slippery floors. The company had been cited previously for the remaining eight violations.

"Once again, Dedicated TCS has failed to protect its workers and expects them to work with hazardous materials such as hydroxide and nitrogen chemical residue in dangerous spaces without safety equipment," Kathy Webb, OSHA's area director in Calumet City, said in a statement.

Repeat violations carry a fine of up to $70,000 per violation. Serious violations carry a fine up $7,000 per violation.

The company has 15 business days from receipt of the citation to pay the fine, request an informal conference with OSHA's area director or contest the citation.

The company couldn't be reached immediately for comment.
