A British soldier has died in hospital from wounds he suffered 3 years ago in Afghanistan.
Lance Corporal Michael Campbell, 32, from 3 Royal Welsh was shot in the stomach while on patrol in Afghanistan in 2012. He had been crossing a road under “accurate, heavy and sustained enemy fire.”
He died on Thursday in Birmingham hospital.
The Ministry of Defence paid tribute to the young soldier, from Colwyn Bay, describing him as “a true Welsh warrior.”
They said: “LCpl Campbell epitomised everything a Reservist in 3 R WELSH should be dedicated, professional and willing to volunteer on operations wherever he was required.”
Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said: “Proud and professional, he epitomised the ethos of the Army Reservist and he had completed numerous tours [of] duty in Afghanistan and Iraq.
“It is particularly tragic that Michael Campbell should die of wounds after such a period of time and I send my deepest condolences to his family and loved ones at this time.”
Since operations began in Afghanistan in October 2011, a total of 454 British forces personnel and Ministry of Defence civilians have died.
