Lanarkshire volunteers to dish out Easter treats for kids this weekend

Around 50 volunteers will take to the streets of Bothwell and Uddingston this weekend to dish out Easter treats to children.

The Bothwell and Uddingston Community Forum Facebook page are behind the event and plan to give every child in the village and town a sweet treat.

They will be dressed in Easter costumes and have a huge truck with ‘Lewis Hamilton’ emblazoned on it.

It all started last year when Uddingston man Allan Stewart, admin of the page, asked for donations of Easter eggs at the height of lockdown in a bid to spread some cheer.

From there it led to him organising both a Hallowe'en and Christmas convoy with treats to give to all the local children.

Allan explained: “It started to simply spread some cheer during lockdown, as the children were missing out on so much due to coronavirus restrictions.

“It was so successful and well received that we decided to do it all over again at Hallowe'en and Christmas and, of course, with restrictions still in place we were keen to do the same again this Easter.

“Once again the level of generosity from the people of Bothwell and Uddingston and local businesses has been phenomenal, with literally hundreds of pounds and thousands of Easter eggs donated to the cause for children.

“We cannot wait to get our costumes back on and get out there this Saturday with a smile and safely, from a distance, hand out the eggs.”

The convoy is set to meet at 3pm on Saturday at Bothwell’s Toolstop on Fallside Road, where they will set off and distribute the eggs as they go.

From there they will travel up Fallside Road at 4pm, turning left onto Main Street, right at Cutfish and along Clyde Terrace, turning right on Blantyre Mill Road, then left on Station Road back on to Main Street, along to Tesco Uddingston and straight along the Main Street to towards the big roundabout.

From there they will turn right up the hill along Old Edinburgh Road, onto Laburnum Road at the Rolling Barrel and along to Myrtle Road, turning right onto Douglas Crescent, then left onto Burnhead Street before returning to Laburnum Road and turning right onto Old Edinburgh Road, then left and right at Philip Murray Road.

They will then go left at the bottom to New Edinburgh Road, round the McDonald’s roundabout and back to Toolstop on Fallside Road.

People are asked to remain at a safe distance and not step on to the road to receive their eggs. They will be distributed safely and securely.
