Lanarkshire cultural diversity event hailed as a success

A Lanarkshire event that celebrated the region's cultural diversity has been hailed as a success.

Organisers at Healthy N' Happy arranged a day of activities at the No 18 Venue in Rutherglen to mark Black History Month in October.

They were delighted with the turn-out and have told Lanarkshire Live they will look to hold similar events in the future.

The day saw an Afrobeat Dance Workshop and Disco held in conjunction with Ark Studios, letting locals learn high energy Afrobeat dance steps.

This was then followed by an Afro-Caribbean cooking class by Heart of Africa that taught locals how to make an infused African-Caribbean curry.

Lastly the film Respect was screened in the venue's community cinema, telling the story of legendary soul great Aretha Franklin.

Brendan Rooney, executive director at Healthy n Happy Community Development Trust, was thrilled with how the day went.

He told Lanarkshire Live : "It was a pleasure to host an event to honour the cultural diversity within our communities of Cambuslang and Rutherglen.

"Given its success, we would love to hold more.

"There was a great buzz around our Number 18 venue.

"Everyone entered into the Afrobeats dancing and enjoyed learning new moves!

"The curry cooking demonstration by Heart of Africa was fantastic - the whole venue smelled amazing, with people enjoying the curry whilst watching the Aretha Franklin biopic ‘Respect’ in our community cinema."
