Lamborghini driver aquaplanes and smashes into motorway barrier before running away

A Lamborghini driver smashed into a motorway barrier after aquaplaning on the M66 near Ramsbottom on Sunday morning.

The driver then ran away from the scene, leaving the smashed-up white luxury sports car submerged in shrubbery, police said.

The crash was described as a 'very expensive mistake' by traffic officers.

GMP Traffic posted about the Lamborghini crash on Twitter, warning the cars 'don't make very good boats'.

The tweet, put up at 8am, said: "Road traffic collision on the M66 near to junction 1.

"The driver of this Lamborghini lost control on standing water and took out a section of barrier before making off on foot prior to police arrival.

"A very expensive mistake.... They don't make very good boats! Vehicle recovered and enqs ongoing."

Heavy rainfall overnight across Greater Manchester led to flooding on some roads in the region.

Photos from Crossley Road at the border of Heaton Chapel and Burnage showed a car was stuck in several feet of water .

Forecasters at the Met Office issued a yellow weather alert on Saturday night.
