Lakers and Carmelo Anthony ‘pausing’ on potential partnership

The Los Angeles Lakers have seen their playoff odds drop to single digits and, in some cases, even less than that. Now they also may have lost the opportunity to add Carmelo Anthony to their 15th roster spot.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported Monday morning that the Lakers had been leaning towards signing Anthony for the rest of the season but the franchise and Anthony’s team believe the partnership doesn’t make much sense given the current state of the Lakers.

The timing of the Lakers’ losing streak and hesitation from the Anthony team present a good way for both parties to walk away from the bargaining table relatively unscathed. The Lakers looked at several other buyout candidates while they had the opportunity to sign Anthony, such as Enes Kanter, who chose the Blazers over the Lakers.

Meanwhile, Anthony has been trying to sign with a playoff team all season. But with the Lakers taking a tumble over the past few games, including Saturday’s embarrassing loss to Phoenix, there’s almost no chance Los Angeles will make the playoffs.
