Lake Macquarie man sentenced over drugs, weapons charges

Shane James Worrall.

A Lake Macquarie man has been sentenced to a two-and-a-half year jail term - to be served in the community as an Intensive Corrections Order - over drug and weapon charges.

Shane James Worrall, 37, previously pleaded guilty to possession of a prohibited weapon without a permit, possession of an unauthorised firearm, supply of cannabis and having an enhanced indoor cannabis cultivation set-up.

Worrall was charged last year when police went to his Boolaroo home to hand him a firearms prohibition order and found a gel gun, a home-made single-shot pistol, .22 calibre shells, gel pellets, blow darts, a knuckle duster and a torch that could be used to deliver an electric shock.

They also found about 1.7kg of cannabis leaf and 34 cannabis plants.

In Newcastle District Court on Tuesday, Judge Roy Ellis said he accepted that Worrall was using the cannabis to extract oil for personal purposes and had given it to associates for medical reasons - while sometimes charging a small fee to cover production costs.

Judge Ellis said there was no evidence Worrall had used any of the weapons for illegal purposes, saying they were "reasonably innocuous but nevertheless they are illegal".

He sentenced Worrall to an aggregate jail term of two years and six months, but ordered that it be served as an Intensive Corrections Order in the community.

Judge Ellis left the matter part-heard and ordered an assessment as to whether Worrall was suitable for home detention.

He flagged he intended to make Mr Worrall subject to home detention for 12 months of the Intensive Corrections Order. The matter will be heard again on October 9.
