Lake council secures state funds for boating infrastructure projects

PLANS: The rundown and fenced-off Belmont Street jetty in Swansea.

SWANSEA'S rundown Belmont Street jetty will be upgraded and a new pontoon built in south-west Lake Macquarie after the council landed NSW government funding for the projects.

The council secured grants in the latest round of Transport for NSW's Boating Now program.

It was awarded $300,000 to replace the Belmont Street jetty and $131,778 to install a floating pontoon alongside the Balcolyn boat ramp.

The Swansea structure has been out of action for more than a year after falling into disrepair.

It is usually popular with visitors to the area given its proximity to the picturesque Swansea Channel and the local shops.

The Balcolyn pontoon, which will be similar to the one installed at Valentine, will allow for better access to watercraft.

Lake Macquarie mayor Kay Fraser said the council would fund about half of the overall cost of the projects.

"We know how much our community values living by the water, and these improvements will help locals and visitors make the most of the sporting and leisure opportunities on Australia's largest coastal lake," she said.

"This project is another example of how the NSW government and council are working together to provide the services and infrastructure our growing community needs."

The council has now landed funding in all three rounds of the Boating Now program. Previous grants helped fund the recently opened $1.4 million jetty at Wangi Wangi and $1.5 million jetty at Speers Point.

Construction is expected to start on the Belmont Street jetty later this year.

Design work on the Balcolyn pontoon will be undertaken within the next 12 months and the structure installed in 2021-22.
