LaDainian Tomlinson named special assistant to Chargers owner Dean Spanos

LaDainian Tomlinson became a Hall of Famer as a San Diego Charger. Now, he will help his old team gain a footing in Los Angeles.

The Chargers have officially hired Tomlinson, 37, as a special assistant to team owner Dean Spanos. He will help the team with fan relations and community outreach.

The role had been under discussion for over a month. He will also continue to serve as an analyst for NFL Network.

"I've always told Dean, 'Look, if there is any way I can help this organization, let me know,' " Tomlinson told the Chargers' website. " 'I'm more than willing to be there and help in the community. Whatever you need.' Over time we've talked about it and what it would look like, and it evolved into this role I'm eager to take on."

But for all the records he set in San Diego, for all the touchdowns he scored and highlights he produced, his latest move will chafe many residents in his old home. In late February, a San Diego Union-Tribune columnist pleaded with Tomlinson to reconsider, arguing that joining the Chargers in Los Angeles would feel like a betrayal.

Since the Chargers announced their move in January, Tomlinson has encouraged fans to stick with the franchise, while acknowledging that it may not be emotionally possible for everyone.

"Honestly, there's no easy way to make the fans in San Diego feel better," he said in early February, days before he was voted into the Hall of Fame. "I feel like there's really nothing I can say. Whatever I say really won't be received in a way that I want it to be received. They're so hurt right now, and angry and disappointed. It takes some time.

"My hope is that they can forgive the franchise. Those hopes that have been loyal to the organization, that have bought season tickets year after year, that they find forgiveness and still are able to support the franchise."
