Labour picks Ronnie Campbell's replacement to fight general election in Blyth Valley seat

Blyth Valley will have a new MP for the first time in over 30 years when the next general election is held.

Local councillor Susan Dungworth will represent Labour at the next election, the party has confirmed.

Veteran Labour MP Ronnie Campbelll is Blyth Valley's current MP, having been elected in 1987.

The 76-year-old announced in June he would "step aside" at the next election.

On Sunday, local party members staged a vote for his replacement on the party ticket.

Labour MP Ronnie Campbell says he would vote for PM's Brexit deal

They chose the former social worker and current Northumberland County and Seaton Valley councillor Ms Dungworth for the task, which she called "an honour".

“We need a Labour MP here in Blyth Valley to stand up for local people," she said.

"I’m really pleased to have been selected as the candidate and we are ready to fight the next election whenever that might be.

“My main priority now is to be out and about talking to voters campaigning tirelessly to keep a Labour MP here and to continue Ronnie Campbell’s legacy. I feel it is such an honour and am very humbled that local members have put their faith in me.

“As a former social worker and now as a local councillor I have seen the worst impacts of Tory policies with cuts to vital public services. This includes police being cut from our streets and neglect of our NHS which has been pushed into crisis.

"I know that only a Labour Government can bring the change we need to make people’s lives better.”

On Monday, MPs will vote on PM Boris Johnson's offer of a December 12 election . A rival SNP and Lib Dem-backed plan would see Britain go to the polls on December 9.

Regardless of the date, the next election will see the end of Mr Campbell's stint in Parliament.

The veteran left-winger and former pit worker sponsored Jeremy Corbyn as Labour's leader and has a reputation for speaking his mind.

In recent years, he has also battled cancer.

Speaking to ChronicleLive earlier this year , Mr Campbell said: "It has been an absolute privilege to serve the people of Blyth Valley and I sincerely thank them for all their support over the years.

"I feel that it’s time, at my age, that I was put out to grass.”
