Kyrie Irving dedicates Game 1 win to Marcus Smart

Following the Boston Celtics blowout victory over the Indiana Pacers in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Playoffs’ first round, Celtics point guard Kyrie Irving dedicates Boston’s victory to Marcus Smart, a player widely considered to be the heart and soul of the team. Last week, it was announced that Smart would miss four to six weeks with a torn left oblique muscle.

“I miss Smart,” Irving responds when asked what the team’s mindset is without Smart. “I miss him so much. Just from the intangibles he brings to the game, offensively and defensively. He fits our team really well and we all had to pick up for him tonight. And this one’s for you bro. 15 more wins to go.”

Irving recorded 20 points (on 6-17 shooting from the field), seven assists, five rebounds and two steals against the Pacers, playing with a level of hustle and determination on defense that would have made Smart proud. In fact, in the third quarter that led to Boston outscoring Indiana 26-8 in the period, the Celtics’ physical defense appeared to be the catalyst for their second half turnaround.

Smart could very well be out for the duration of Boston’s playoff run unless they make it all the way to the NBA Finals. In his absence, the Celtics will have to play with his spirit, especially against tough defensive teams like the Pacers.
