Kyle Lafferty departs Kilmarnock as Rugby Park club announce striker exit 'regret' in blunt one-line statement

Kyle Lafferty has left Kilmarnock early by mutual consent, the Rugby Park club have confirmed.

The Northern Ireland international was embroiled in controversy earlier this season after copping a 10-match ban for use of sectarian language while on duty for his country. He's scored three times this season for Derek McInnes' side and they have now confirmed on deadline day that the former Rangers striker is departing Ayrshire. He was meant to be there for the rest of the season but had his second spell ended early.

He previously had a spell in 2021 but was not able to keep them up despite a raft of goals during his first spell at Kilmarnock, returning to their Championship title bid last season after a spell abroad with Anorthosis Famagusta. Lafferty is now 35 and is well-travelled, having started out at Burnley, featuring for the likes of Rangers, Palermo, Norwich City, Hearts, Sunderland and several more in the UK plus clubs abroad. McInnes has bolstered his striker department with Kyle Vassell this month, with the team currently joint-bottom of the top flight.

A statement reads: "It’s with regret that Kyle Lafferty and Kilmarnock Football Club have parted company by mutual consent. We thank Kyle for his service to the club."
