Kvistgaarden to Celtic latest as competitors 'intensify' pursuit of forward

Bundesliga outfit Frankfurt have reportedly intensified their pursuit of Mathias Kvistgaarden, although Celtic are also 'trying hard' to land the forward ahead of the summer transfer window.

The 23-year-old has been in fine fettle for Brondby this season, scoring 22 goals and assisting four in 33 appearances.

Celtic have been widely linked with the striker previously.

Now, they face competition to land Kvistgaarden, with Frankfurt 'intensifying' their pursuit of the Dane, claims Tipsbladet. The Bundesliga side will face competition from the newly crowned Scottish Premiership champions, however.

Indeed, it is said that Celtic have watched Kvistgaarden several times this season and are also 'trying hard' to secure his services.

Brendan Rodgers made public his desire to sign a new number nine in the January transfer window when Kyogo Furuhashi departed for Rennes.

His wish wasn't granted, though, as Celtic brought in left-back Jeffrey Schlupp and winger Jota

The former's loan expires at the season's end, while the Portuguese attacker has recently been ruled out for six to nine months.

"It’s the cruciate and it was worse than we'd hoped, really," said manager Brendan Rodgers.

"So he starts on his journey of recovery from that now, but somewhere between six and nine months."

The Celtic manager also delivered an update on the fitness of other players ahead of his side's trip to Ibrox on Sunday.

He said: "Ali Johnston won't be available, Ali's been needing an injection into his hip that he's had for a period of time. To ensure he was ready for the cup final and in our preparation we decided that we would do that after the Dundee United game.

"So I picked him out of the game at the weekend and most probably the St Mirren game and that gives him a few weeks then to be ready for the cup final.

"Dane Murray has had an issue with his knee and he'll be out for the rest of the season and then be ready for pre-season.

"We've got Yang back, Yang’s back training with the squad so we'll give him one more day tomorrow and then we'll see if he's going to be available for the squad.

"Daizen should be fine and Nicolas was out, we're just assessing him and a slight issue with his knee but he should be okay. We had the scan on that, it's just a little bit of bruising but he should be okay."
