Kurt Walker lays out Windsor Park world title ambition

Northern Ireland football fanatic Kurt Walker says his dream ambition is to one day win a world title under the floodlights of Windsor Park.

A former European amateur champion and Commonwealth Games medallist, Walker becomes the first member of Ireland's Tokyo Olympics team to turn professional after signing a management deal with Conlan Boxing.

The 26-year-old is hoping to make his pro debut before the end of the year at featherweight, and is already aiming high under the guidance of boxing brothers Jamie and Michael Conlan.

"I want to win a world title and then retire, chill out and enjoy the rest of my life," Walker smiled at Wednesday's press conference to announce his deal.

"Winning a world title at Windsor Park would be the ultimate dream. Then defend it a few times and retire around the age of 34 after a good career.

"I remember being at the Carl Frampton fight against Luke Jackson at Windsor Park and it was amazing. That's what dreams are made of and it is something I want to achieve.

"Seeing Windsor transformed into a boxing arena was mad. It was crazy seeing how hyped up people get for a boxing fight.

"I am a big Northern Ireland fan. I went to the Euros in 2016 and it is one of the best experiences I have ever had as a sports fan.

"So having those fans back me at Windsor would be special."

Walker - who has also signed a multi-fight deal with Top Rank Boxing - hopes to have his debut fight announced in the next week, and believes he has the skills and ability to make his mark in the pro game.

"I surprise a lot of people. I make a lot of good boxers look ordinary, and I believe I can do that as a professional," he added.

"I can't wait to make my debut. Where that will be, we have to wait and see. Hopefully it is in the UK."

He added: "Having Conlan Boxing and Top Rank behind me is brilliant.

"Jamie has done it the hard way and been one of the best managers in the UK in recent years.

"And Michael has come through a similar route as I have so I can learn off all that experience.

"Mick's work ethic is very good, and if I train with him and follow his advice then hopefully I can hit the same heights."
