A fire that broke out inside a Kooragang Island fertiliser facility has been brought under control.
About 60 firefighters from across Newcastle rushed to the Egret Street building, operated by Port Hunter Commodities, at about 12.30pm on Sunday following reports that smoke was seen billowing from the site.
A dozen workers were evacuated, while the adjacent Newcastle Coal Infrastructure Group plant was forced to cease operations.
Fire crews were unable to use water to extinguish the sulpher-based product. Instead they used machinery to remove the fertiliser from the site.
A NSW Fire and Rescue spokesman said the blaze had been contained at 4.30pm, however, crews would remain on the site to monitor the situation.
The cause of the fire is not known.
