KOLKATA: Less than a week after students broke open the locks of Eden Hindu Hostel and took over the premises, girl students entered the girls’ hostel in Salt Lake and occupied the rooms.
The decision to “occupy” the girls’ hostel was taken in a general body meeting on the College Street campus on Monday afternoon.
Several girl students took out a protest rally from College Street campus and reached the hostel in Salt Lake in the evening. They broke the locks on the main gate and entered the hostel.
“The university authorities were not giving any satisfactory reply on when they will open the hostel. We had no other option but to break the locks and enter the hostel,” said a student.
“We are in the process of revamping the infrastructure and trying to get superintendent and deputy superintendent for the hostels,” said an official.
Last week, education minister Bratya Basu spoke to vice-chancellor Anuradha Lohia and asked about delay in opening the hostels. He directed the university authorities to resolve all issues and open the hostels.
The students said many of them were from outside the city and did not have any accommodation. “Many girls are here for the first time. They don’t even know anybody in Kolkata,” said another student.
