Kolkata: KMC, fire department agree on high-rise definition

KOLKATA: Developers of three to four-storey buildings will no longer have to go through the fire NOC and other formalities that is mandatory for developers of high-rises. The West Bengal Fire Services (Amendment) bill, 2022, was passed at the state assembly on Friday, which states that from now on the minimum height required for a building to be treated as a high-rise has been raised from 14.5 meters or more to 15.5 meters or more, in respect with the area falling under KMC.

With this, there will be no disparity and technical problem between the Kolkata Municipal Corporation Building rules and the West Bengal Fire Services act in matters of law enforcement for both KMC and fire services department of high-rises.

KMC mayor and urban development & municipal affairs minister Firhad Hakim, said, with this amendment in the fire services act, the disparity between the KMC and the fire services act on the definition of high-rises has been removed. This will help developers of three or four-storey buildings, as they no longer have to follow the formalities like that of the the high-rise developers.

For areas falling under any other local authority in the rest of the state other than KMC, the definition of high-rise building for law enforcement will be above 14.5 meters.
