Kolkata: Chased by police during raid, youth run over by train; mob attacks cops

KOLKATA: Locals threw brickbats at the officers of Bidhannagar Police and Kolkata Police and blocked the road at Patipukur for several hours on Wednesday night after a 25-year-old youth was run over by a train.

The victim, Pushpendu Daptari —who worked in a local fish market — was reportedly trying to escape as cops from Lake Town police station raided the area near Patipukur rail bridge over the complaints of illegal hooch and gambling den operating there.

Locals alleged that the cops chased the men who had gathered beside the railway tracks. When the victim was fleeing with others, the train mowed him down. However, Daptari’s father said that the victim was not a part of the group sitting beside the railway tracks and drinking. Rather he was playing mobile games and he got tensed on seeing the police charging at him.

“My son didn’t do any wrong. Then why was he chased and had to die such a tragic death?” asked his father, Sushil. Later, the victim’s family lodged a complaint against the Bidhannagar Police officers with Dum Dum GRP.

Bidhannagar Police refused to comment on the matter, citing jurisdiction issue. But GRP officials probing in the case confirmed that local police had conducted a raid in the area.
