A knife-wielding would-be robber ran off empty-handed after being chased away by his victim's mum.

Police were called to Talbot Road in the Newton area of Hyde, in Tameside, on Wednesday night.

It was the second incident to be reported on the street in just 10 days.

Officers investigating believe the same person is responsible.

According to the police, the most recent incident happened at around 9.45pm on Wednesday.

The victim was confronted by the masked man after getting out of her mum's car on corner on Hallbottom Street.

He threatened her, telling her he would stab her if she didn't want over her belongings.

But the victim's mum turned up and challenged the thug, who ran away.

On March 18 - just over a week earlier - a 17-year-old boy was targeted as he walked down Talbot Road with a friend at around 9pm.

There was reportedly some sort of 'confrontation or scuffle', during which the thief pulled out a knife.

He threatened the teenager, demanding cash and threatening to stab him.

The victim did as he was told, before the man fled.

Tameside South Inspector Lee Broadstock said that in both incidents the suspect was described as being white, aged around 17, and wearing dark clothes and a balaclava.
