Kliff Kingsbury wants Kyler Murray’s contract done before training camp

The biggest story surrounding the Arizona Cardinals this offseason has been quarterback Kyler Murray and the contract extension that he seeks. This has dragged on for months, but, if you listen to Kliff Kingsbury, it sounds like it should be coming relatively soon.

“We’re about to make him the highest-paid player in franchise history,” he said Tuesday after practice.

That sounds somewhat imminent but Kingsbury definitely has a preference as to when the deal is done.

“I’m praying before training camp,” he said. Camp dates have not been announced, but will begin around the final week of July.

“I just want him there Day 1 of training camp,” he said. He doesn’t want to deal with any potential holdout.

He wasn’t suggesting that a holdout would happen. He doesn’t want the possibility.

“I just personally, I’m being selfish here,” he added. “I’d love for him to be there the first day of training camp.”

Kingsbury will continue to be in contact with Murray until camp, but he reiterated what he said back at the NFL combine — it’s all football and never about contracts.

General manager Steve Keim seems to be waiting for July. No fourth-year quarterback has gotten an extension before then and Keim doesn’t appear to want to be the one to set a new precedent.

Once training camp dates are announced, that first day then becomes a date to watch. Will they have a deal done before then?

That’s what Kingsbury and likely the majority of Cardinals fans are hoping.
