KL Rahul-led Lucknow Super Giants register an unwanted record in IPL

NEW DELHI: During their clash against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL 2024, KL Rahul-led Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) suffered their biggest defeat by runs in the history of the tournament, facing a staggering 98-run loss.

This defeat surpassed their previous record, an 81-run loss against Mumbai Indians (MI) in the 2023 season, securing the second spot on the list. Additionally, their 62-run defeat to Gujarat Titans (GT) in both IPL 2022 and 2023 ranks as their third biggest loss in the T20 tournament.

Opting to field first after winning the toss, LSG faced a formidable challenge as Sunil Narine's explosive 81, supported by contributions from Phil Salt, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, and Ramandeep Singh, propelled KKR to a daunting total of 235/6 in their allotted 20 overs. Despite Naveen-ul-Haq's three wickets for LSG, KKR's batsmen dominated the proceedings.

In the run chase, LSG struggled to build partnerships, losing wickets at regular intervals. Marcus Stoinis and skipper KL Rahul emerged as the top scorers, but LSG faltered, eventually getting bowled out for 137 runs in 16.1 overs.

Harshit Rana and Varun Chakaravarthy starred with the ball for KKR, claiming three wickets each.

With this victory, KKR solidified their position at the top of the table with eight wins, three losses, and 16 points, while LSG occupied the fifth spot with six wins, five losses, and 12 points.

Sunil Narine's impactful performance earned him the 'Player of the Match' award for his valuable contribution of one wicket and an explosive 81-run knock, further highlighting his significance to the KKR team.
