Unpredictable weather conditions in Kolkata have emerged as a major talking point ahead of the IPL 2026 clash between Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians at Eden Gardens.
With Kolkata receiving frequent rainfall in recent days, concerns over a possible washout have intensified, especially with KKR still holding slim hopes of reaching the playoffs.
Kolkata Knight Riders are currently placed eighth on the points table with 11 points from 12 matches and cannot afford to lose points due to weather interruptions. Mumbai Indians have already been eliminated from playoff contention.
KKR vs MI: Kolkata weather today
According to the latest report issued by the India Meteorological Department, Kolkata is likely to witness rain and thunderstorms later in the day.
The IMD stated that humid and uncomfortable weather conditions are expected, with thunderstorms and light rain likely in some areas during the afternoon and evening hours.
The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to remain around 35°C and 28°C respectively. At the time of reporting, the temperature in Kolkata was recorded at 35.5°C with rain probability estimated at 67 percent.
Weather data showed:
- Maximum temperature: 35.4°C
- Minimum temperature: 28.7°C
- Maximum humidity: 86%
- Minimum humidity: 64%
Kolkata also remains under a yellow alert during the afternoon, with thunderstorms forecast between 3:30 PM and 6:30 PM.
The IMD warning stated that light to moderate thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, rain and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30–40 kmph were likely to affect parts of Kolkata district for two to three hours from 3:30 PM on May 20, 2026.
KKR vs MI pitch report
The pitch at Eden Gardens has largely remained batting-friendly throughout the IPL 2026 season.
The surface has offered consistent bounce and pace, allowing batters to play aggressively while providing limited assistance to bowlers.
One notable trend this season has been the success of chasing teams at the venue. Both matches played at Eden Gardens have witnessed successful run chases of targets exceeding 220 runs.
With dew expected later in the evening and the surface likely to remain favourable for batting across both innings, captains winning the toss may once again prefer to bowl first and chase the target.
Match interruptions still possible despite lower evening rain prediction
Although AccuWeather currently predicts a relatively lower probability of rainfall during match hours, the possibility of interruptions or a delayed toss remains.
If weather conditions extend into the evening, officials may face challenges in ensuring uninterrupted play at Eden Gardens.
IPL rules for rain-hit matches explained
Under IPL regulations, a match cannot be officially decided unless a minimum of five overs per side are completed.
In the event of rain interruptions, match officials and ground staff will use the available extra time to attempt to reduce the contest to a five-over match.
Umpires continue inspecting field conditions and consulting ground staff until the final cutoff time. If the outfield is deemed unsafe or insufficient time remains to complete a five-over game, the match is declared a “No Result”.
Washout could severely damage KKR playoff chances
A complete washout at Eden Gardens could significantly dent Kolkata Knight Riders’ playoff hopes.
If the match is abandoned, both teams would receive one point each, taking KKR to 12 points with only one league-stage match remaining.
An outright victory is considered crucial for Kolkata to remain competitive in the playoff race. Even if KKR win their final match after a washout, their maximum tally would rise only to 14 points.
With teams such as Punjab Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Chennai Super Kings already positioned around the 13 and 14-point mark with matches still remaining, Kolkata’s qualification hopes would become increasingly difficult.
