Kitchens: ‘we’re still going to try to block’ new Titans kicker’s attempts

The Cleveland Browns aren’t the only NFL team entering the 2019 season with some uncertainty at the placekicker spot. Even the team’s Week 1 foe, the Tennessee Titans, is in full scramble mode.

Veteran kicker Ryan Succop was placed on IR on Wednesday after suffering a knee injury. The new Titans kicker is Cairo Santos, a former Chiefs kicker under now-Browns GM John Dorsey.

When informed about the surprising change during his morning press conference, Browns coach Freddie Kitchens was nonplussed. Kitchens reaction?

“We’re still going to go try to block his kick.”

It’s the second time Santos has replaced Succop in his six-year career. He also supplanted Succop with the Chiefs in 2014 when the latter moved on to the Titans. They have almost identical career FG accuracy percentages, so Kitchens is right on in his approach. Santos has never had a kick attempt blocked, however.
