Kirkstall Abbey announces new entry fee - but not everyone has to pay

One of Leeds' most popular tourist attractions has announced it is introducing an entrance fee.

Kirkstall Abbey will start charging visitors from this week as part of plans to preserve the historic site.

But not everyone visiting the 870-year-old abbey will have to pay.

Following a consultation earlier this year, the entrance fee will now be charged to people visiting from outside of Leeds. Entry will remain free for Leeds residents and people who live in Leeds City Council tax postcode areas.

From this week an admission charge of £5 will be payable for adults visiting from outside the city, with a charge of £2.50 for accompanying children and under 5s being free to enter.

For those eligible for free entry, you will need to show proof of address, such as a driving licence or utility bill. Once verified, you will be given an annual pass, which gives you access to Kirkstall Abbey for 12 months.

Announcing the news on social media, a spokesperson for the landmark said: "After 870 years of being one of the most beautiful Cistercian ruins in the country, we’ve been looking for ways to keep Kirkstall Abbey going for another 870." They then explained how the new process will work.

"Charging admission will provide essential income for the abbey, ensuring ongoing conservation can take place. The additional income will also mean that we can grow our programme of seasonal events, tours, and activities," the spokesperson added.
