Kirkcudbright family organise We're A Knockout competition for diabetes charity

A fundraising fun day will be taking place at Stewartry Rugby Club early next month.

The Anderson family from Kirkcudbright have organised We’re A Knockout, based on the popular BBC TV show It’s a Knockout.

More than 200 people will put themselves to the test on June 3 and people are encouraged to get out to support the teams and raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) at the same time.

Kirkcudbright community pharmacist, Soenaid Anderson, said: “Everyone will know someone taking part and I’d love people to come out to have a laugh and a drink.

“Bring a picnic blanket, bring some camping chairs and come to watch the carry on. There’s nothing funnier than watching people dressed as Teletubbies trying to jump through hoops!

“The club has been very good, they’re not charging us anything and James Picken the president has been very accommodating.

“My target was £3,000 but I’d like to make £4,000, which would be amazing. It’s been a good team effort from everybody so let’s hope for sunshine on the day.”

Soenaid’s 19-year-old daughter, Maisie, was diagnosed with type one diabetes when she was 10 years old.

The pair were instrumental in campaigning for scanners to be made available to type one diabetics through the NHS, which included a trip to the Scottish Parliament.

And they have also raised tens of thousands of pounds for JDRF over the last nine years.

Soenaid said: “Nobody had heard of the charity in this area, now there are boxes and stickers everywhere.

“The Scottish manager of JDRF said Dumfries and Galloway was a wee area they hadn’t quite got into but now, because of these events, it’s a logo everyone knows.

“You can raise all the money you want but you also want to raise awareness of the symptoms, signs and the charity. That’s just as important as it’s still on the rise, which is scary.

“One day, if they find a big breakthrough or a cure, everyone here can say they’ve played a big part in that.”

We’re a Knockout will take place at Stewartry RFC’s Greenlaw ground on June 3, with the fun beginning from 1pm.

Twenty-four teams of 10 are entered to tackle inflatables, water, foam and more, with spectators encouraged to come along to enjoy the fun.

Free parking will be available and the rugby club will be opening their bar and snack hut and there will also be a barbecue, while there will be a cocktail bar thanks to Soenaid’s sister Emma and her partner Megan from the Bottom Bar at The Market Inn in Castle Douglas.

And their offering includes a limited edition, bright blue JDRF cocktail.

They are also offering a raffle prize of a cocktails and combo for two.

And there will also be a raffle for two nights in the Domes By The Sea at Torrs Farm thanks to the Picken family. Maisie and dad Lee will be selling the raffle tickets.
