Probe launched into Kirkby train derailment that caused significant damage

Rail services will remain disrupted for at least two days after a train derailed at Kirkby station yesterday evening.

Operator Merseyrail confirmed the train hit a buffer stop at the station just after 6.30pm on Saturday, leaving behind very significant damage.

This morning Merseyrail said train services to Kirkby will be terminated at and started back from Rice Lane.

A replacement bus service will convey passengers between Rice Lane and Kirkby in both directions until further notice.

In an update this morning, the train operator said: "Services on the Kirkby Line will remain suspended between Rice Lane and Kirkby until the end of the day.

"A bus service is operating from Rice Lane to Kirkby in both directions.

"There will be no services on the Kirkby Line tomorrow. Customers will be advised to use Ormskirk Line services.

"For Rice Lane use Walton Station and for Fazakerley and Kirkby there will be a replacement bus service running from Aintree station calling to Fazakerley and Kirkby in both directions."

Investigators today launched a probe into how the train managed to leave the tracks in such a dangerous fashion.

It has now emerged the driver of the Merseyrail service was taken to hospital by ambulance as a precautionary measure.

Twelve passengers were on board the 6.35pm travelling from Knowsley toward Liverpool, along with two crew members.

They were described as "walking wounded" with minor injuries.

The passengers all managed to walk off the train following the smash, and were checked at the scene by paramedics.

They did not need additional medical treatment, but the train driver was taken to hospital.
