Kippford Lifeboat crew set to hold virtual open week due to coronavirus restrictions

Kippford’s lifeboat team is holding a virtual open week.

The crew is hosting a series of events on Facebook, starting on Monday and running right through to August 2.

The RNLI station had to cancel its popular open day due to the pandemic but it lined up a series of online efforts, including activities for children, a photo competition, a quiz, a chance to find out more about the crew and a virtual tour of the station.

Lifeboat operations manager Gareth Jones said: “The open day is usually one of our busiest days of the year for fundraising and highlighting the work of the RNLI so we were all disappointed that it couldn’t go ahead.

“I’m really pleased that we are able to host a virtual open week instead and look forward to the chance to share some of our stories with the public who support us.”

The station has been handed a boost with local business ETB Technologies sponsoring the virtual open week with a £1000 donation.

Managing director Nick Stapleton said: “We believe in supporting local good causes and, although the RNLI is a national charity, the work they do has a great impact locally. I’m really pleased to be able to support the station in this event and hope that the virtual open week is a success.”

There has been a lifeboat station in the village since 1966 with the annual open day popular among visitors and locals. Last year saw boats from around the Solway attending.

Details of all the online activities and how to make donations can be found at www.facebook.com/KippfordRNLI.
