Kings to waive 2016 top draft pick Georgios Papagiannis, sources say

The Kings will waive center Georgios Papagiannis, league sources confirmed to The Sacramento Bee.

Papagiannis was the 13th pick in the 2016 NBA draft. The second-year center from Greece has appeared in 38 games, 16 this season, averaging 2.1 points and 2.3 rebounds.

For his career, Papagiannis, 20, is averaging 4.2 points and 3.2 rebounds.

He was part of the draft-day trade with the Phoenix Suns that also gave Sacramento the rights to Bogdan Bogdanovic, the 28th pick (Skal Labissiere) and a 2020 second-round selection in exchange for Marquese Chriss, the No. 8 overall pick.

The Kings' selection of Papagiannis was widely criticized because they already had an All-Star center in DeMarcus Cousins, and Papagiannis never developed into a rotation player for Sacramento.

The Kings had already picked up Papagiannis' option, so they will be on the hook for his $2.4 million salary for next season.
